What's different about a New York paycheck

The city tax is real money. If you live in New York City, the city takes its own income tax on top of the state's — up to a 4.25% withholding rate at higher incomes. Yonkers residents pay a surcharge of 16.75% of their state tax, and people who work in Yonkers but live elsewhere pay a 0.5% earnings tax. Many national calculators ignore all of this; here it's included when you pick your location above.

Paid Family Leave comes out of your pay. In 2026 the employee contribution is 0.432% of your gross wages, capped at $411.91 for the year. Once you've paid the cap, it stops — enter your year-to-date wages in the advanced section and this calculator applies the cap.

SDI depends on your employer. New York's disability benefits law lets (but doesn't require) employers deduct 0.5% of wages, up to $0.60 a week. It's tiny, but if you see a small "SDI" or "DBL" line on your pay stub, that's it — tick the box above to include it.

How this calculator works

New York withholding uses the exact calculation method (Method II) from the state's official Publication NYS-50-T (1/26) tables: your pay is annualized, the deduction allowance for your filing status ($7,400 single / $7,950 married) plus $1,000 per IT-2104 exemption is subtracted, and the official 2026 rate schedule is applied. At very high incomes the state's Method III flat rates are used, as the booklet requires. NYC and Yonkers follow their own NYS-50-T booklets. Federal withholding follows IRS Publication 15-T (2026). Common questions

I live in New Jersey / Connecticut but work in New York. Which tax do I pay?
New York taxes the wages you earn in New York, so the state lines here apply. Your home state usually gives you a credit for tax paid to New York when you file — but it isn't withheld from this paycheck.

Why is my real paycheck a bit different?
The state's per-period tables are individually rounded, so a cent or two of difference from this annualized calculation is normal. Your actual IT-2104 entries and benefits may also differ from what you typed here.

What about overtime?
Include overtime pay in your gross. To figure out the overtime itself, use our Overtime Calculator.
